Homowo Heritage Festival
Saturday, September 3, 201610:00 am - 3:00 pm
St. Philips Heritage Center in Old Salem
911 South Church Street, Winston-Salem

The Homowo Heritage Festival is a celebration of African American foodways and culture.  It includes food tastings of authentic Ghanaian, Liberian and African American Soul Food, African storytelling, African drumming, dancing, hands-on activities such as okra painting, games and displays.  The Environmental Ownership Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Phi Omega Chapter will coordinate community garden groups to prepare a dish for the food tasting. Earl Ijames, curator with North Carolina Museum of History, will give a talk on From Africa to America to Your Plate.

Homowo (hō ΄- mō - wă) is a word from Ghana, West Africa which means “hooting at hunger.”  Old Salem’s African American seed collection is named for this.  We invite you to view our Homowo Harvest Collection.
